Motion of Still, 2026

Motion of Still is the culmination of a 3-month residency at Barrett House. Here, I delved into an ongoing fascination of bodies in motion, and therefore the movement in stillness. This was sparked by my residency in Meteora, Greece in September 2025, where I was struck by the way weathering, wind and water had shaped towering rock faces over deep time, and how bodies of rock stood completely still, yet were full of so much movement in the way they had been shaped and eroded. There was a way that this felt similar to my own body, weathered physically and metaphorically by movement and gestures of fidgeting and self-soothing to ground itself in an unfamiliar place.

Motion of still uses watercolours, clay and ceramics, and string to document bodies in motion, both animate and inanimate, paused in their moment of stillness. The push, pull and weight of gravity is moving human bodies, but also moves bodies of sunlight, creating fleeting shadows, and in bodies of water, creating rich textures in its ebb and flow. Our bodies and the bodies we are in a state of mutual exchange with are a force unto gravity, delicate balances of fragility and resistance.

Clay is deeply sensitive to the bodies touch. My hands have interacted with clay in a way that wears it down, carving, moulding and eroding. Sun shadows, fragile, fleeting have been captured by watercolour as they dance across the paper. They are installed with strings and ceramics weighing them down, a nod to the push and pull of gravity our own bodies and those that we are surrounded by are subject to as we move through space, time and seasons.
